Get to know light heavyweight. Jose Augusto Azevedos Barros, as he enters into the Bellator cage on short notice against Anthony Johnson.
Jose Augusto Azevedos Barros steps in on short notice Saturday night to challenge former UFC light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Johnson, in the co-main event of Bellator 258. Barros replaces former UFC middleweight, Yoel Romero, who withdrew from the bout and the Grand Prix after suffering an eye injury and failing a pre-fight medical screening.
The bout serves as the co-main event with the winner earning a spot in the semifinals in the coming months.
Barros is 7-2, 1 NC as a professional, and is 1-0 inside the Bellator cage. His last outing, which was his debut, took place at Bellator 255 on April 2, where he dispatched Jonathan Wilson via a first-round arm-triangle choke. The victory marked Barros’ fifth-straight, which dates back to Sept. 2018.
Barros has five KO/TKO’s and two submission wins to his credit. Barrros has been competing in MMA since Aug. 2012, and after a rocky start, has put together a string of wins to help kickstart his young career.
Who is former UFC light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Johnson?
Johnson is a long-time veteran of MMA and an ex-UFC light heavyweight title challenger. After a five-year absence from the sport, Johnson looks to start fresh under a new banner. The vast majority of his career has been spent in the Octagon at welterweight and light heavyweight.
He began his UFC career in 2007 and struggled to find consistency throughout the first few years. A four-fight win streak in 2008 put him on the doorstep of a title shot, but it never came. After a multitude of weight-cutting issues that saw him get released from the promotion in 2012, Johnson dominated the regional circuit. A streak of six straight wins saw him return to the UFC with a vengeance, as he worked his way towards a title shot.
Johnson would earn two cracks at the light heavyweight title, losing to Daniel Cormier both times. He would eventually retire following his second Cormier defeat before officially signing with Bellator in 2020.
Will Barros pull off the upset or will Johnson advance in the tournament? The world will soon find out.
