Leon Edwards outclasses Nate Diaz despite final-minute scare

Leon Edwards survives fifth-round scare from Nate Diaz to take unanimous decision win at UFC 263.

The first-ever UFC bout that was set for five rounds that was neither a main event nor a title fight ends in victory for Leon Edwards — though Nate Diaz nearly got the best of him in the fight’s final minute.

A quiet first round saw Diaz play his usual mind games and try to make things unorthodox with his attacks. Edwards landed the better strikes, however, and when Diaz started to get things going, Edwards clinched him up and landed a takedown, plus some leg kicks to boot when standing.

Diaz continued to try his mind games in the second round, and he nearly locked Edwards in a leg lock. But Edwards’ leg kicks were the focus of the round, and that included one that seemed to stun Diaz.

Edwards continued to take Diaz down in the third round, busting him open around his face with a big elbow and several hard shots. Diaz tried to play it cool, throwing up a double middle finger (which Edwards responded with his own) and saw the horn.

Edwards’ striking success continued over the remaining two rounds, but Diaz caused a huge scare in the fight’s final minute, rocking Edwards and stumbling him with a Stockton slap and left hand, plus several follow-up strikes.
